It is dedicated to Saint Isaac of Dalmatia, a patron saint of Peter the Great, who was born on the feast day of St. Isaac. The cathedral is one of the most splendid edifices in the city, and has a colonnade which leads to one of the best observation desks to view the city from above. It was built by the French architect Montferrand, who spent 40 years on its construction.
